According to Digitimes, Apple and Samsung will dominate OLED display supply this year whilst smaller phone vendors struggle to secure suppliers. The report says Apple will get about 75 million OLED panels from Samsung in 2017 for iPhone 8, which is about 15% of total annual OLED production output. Samsung Electronics will get about 56%; Apple’s share would be even higher if the iPhone 8 launched earlier in the year....

This update also configures the Java web plug-in to disable the automatic execution of Java applets. Users may re-enable automatic execution of Java applets using the Java Preferences application. If the Java web plug-in detects that no applets have been run for an extended period of time it will again disable Java applets....
Apple has just unveiled the new generation Apple TV, Apple TV 4K. The new set-top box features 4K output with HDR, Dolby Vision and HDR10, to play the latest movies and TV shows at 3840×2160 resolution. Apple used a special projector in the theater to demo the ‘cinematic quality’ output. The company demoed the new Spiderman movie in 4K HDR. Apple has just announced the latest version of its desktop operating system, macOS Catalina. macOS 10.15 Catalina brings the death of iTunes and brand new Music, Podcasts and a TV app. iOS device sync has moved to the Finder. Podcasts features machine-learning powered search, by finding text that was spoken in the podcast. The new TV app looks a lot like the TV app from iOS. Compatible content playback includes 4K HDR and Atmos content....
As expected, Apple today has not released a new Apple Watch model but rather announced a handful of new bands for the device. Most notably, Apple has announced a new Space Black version of the Milanese Loop. According to a report from Silicon Valley Business Journal, Apple has recently purchased a former chip fab in North San Jose. The deal reportedly went through last week and saw Apple pay $18.2 million for the 70,000 square foot building. Prior to Apple’s purchase, the plant was a manufacturing plant for semiconductor company Maxim Integrated Products. Following the release of iOS 12.0.1 to the public today, Apple has stopped signing iOS 11.4.1. With this change, users can no longer downgrade from iOS 12 to iOS 11. Analytics company Localytics said that of all the gadgets purchased across the Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend, the iPad Air enjoyed by far the largest boost in sales. Comparing activations with those for the previous weekend, 51 percent more iPad Airs were sold, with Apple also taking second and third places with the original iPad Mini and iPhone 5c. In all, Apple products took six of the top nine places. Localytics analysed figures for over a million devices to reach its conclusions....
The Apple community has had a hard time being content with the Mac lately. First it was the feeling that the Mac line including MacBook Pros weren’t being updated as often as, say, iPhones. A redesigned MacBook Pro helps resolve that with at least one member of the Mac family. But the new MacBook Pro goes all in on USB-C and drops legacy ports like standard USB-A, and many Mac users believe this move is too aggressive considering the cost attached to this transition....
As the Epic vs Apple trial continues, the latter has submitted a filing in the case to have the court make a ruling on Epic’s allegation that iOS is an essential facility. Apple believes the judgment should be granted in its favor as Epic hasn’t offered up evidence for the claim and provides two core reasons for why it should be dismissed. Apple has told Re/code that it is increasing the number of scholarship places offered at this year’s WWDC from 200 to 350 as part of its work to create greater diversity amongst developers. Those selected get a free ticket to the developer’s conference. The company last year published its first ever diversity report, showing that the company is fairly typical of tech companies today: 70% male, 55% white. A report from Times Union newspaper today claims Apple could be looking to GlobalFoundries to make chips for the iPhone and iPad at its “Fab 8” plant in Malta, New York (via MacRumors). It’s unclear if the move would be to reduce its dependence on Samsung, its current manufacturing partner for the iPhone and iPad system-on-a-chip, but Times Union says Samsung will go to Fab 8 at least initially to assist GlobalFoundries in preparing to build the chips:...
Apple has announced the iTunes Festival 2010 in London, UK, promising 62 bands across 31 days in a series of gigs at the Roundhouse. The first three headliners have been announced, these include Scissor Sisters (July 1), Tony Bennett (July 2) & Ozzy Osbourne (July 3). “This has all the makings of a great gig,” says Ozzy Osbourne who will release Scream, his first album in almost three years via Epic, on June 14....
