Apple has posted its 10k filing with the SEC this afternoon that features a slew of numbers and new title changes. CFO Peter Oppenheimer has been named the Principal Accounting Officer, taking over Betsy Rafael. Additionally, Apple has named Scott Forstall ‘Special Advisor to CEO Tim Cook’ on his way out of the company at the end of this year. As for numbers, Apple says it has expanded its research and development section by $1 billion, has 72,800 full-time employees on staff (up 12,400 from last year), added 33 new retail stores this year, has 17....

Apple today announced its plan to bring UIKit to the Mac. This is a multi-year project. Apple is testing the new cross-platform frameworks with its own stock apps in macOS Mojave. It will be available to third-party developers in 2019. Apple is extending the iOS interface frameworks to work well on the Mac windowing system. It specifically said that it will not be merging iOS and macOS. The frameworks are in internal testing with Apple this year, and developers will learn about how to start using them for their apps next year....

Today in Japan, Apple previewed the upcoming grand opening of their newest retail store. Located in the city of Kyoto, the store will be the company’s 504th location worldwide and ninth operating in Japan. Kyoto’s Shijo Street is a commercial and retail center, home to many luxury shops and retailers including the upscale Daimaru department store. Steps from Daimaru is Kyoto’s Zero Gate, a branch of the shopping complex chain owned by retailer Parco....

Apple today announced that it is expanding its “Everyone Can Code” intititave to a new round of universities around the world. In a press release, the company revealed that the program is now available at more than 20 new colleges and universities, including Australia’s RMIT… The new schools will now offer the App Development with Swift Curriculum, which is a full-year course designed from the ground up by Apple engineers and educators....

Apple may have outsourced Black Friday discounts on its products to other retailers this year, but it’s not staying completely out of the promotion game during the Christmas shopping season. Starting today Apple is bundling $60 gift cards that can be used toward Apple Music memberships with almost all Beats headphones and speakers purchased from Apple for a limited time. The promotion specifically pushes Apple Music memberships as it can pay for almost 6 months of access, but the $60 credit can be used toward iTunes, iBooks, and App Store, and Mac App Store purchases and subscriptions as well....

The legal battle between Apple and Qualcomm is expected to gain momentum next month, when the trial begins in San Diego. A new filing reveals that the trial will include testimony by both Apple CEO Tim Cook, as well as Qualcomm CEO Steven Mollenkopf. Bloomberg was first to report on the joint witness list filing. According to the documents, Cook will testify on Apple’s business strategy and financial performance, as well as the agreements Apple has in place with other technology companies....

Apple has launched a new way for users in the United States to more easily disable Activation Lock on their device. As first spotted by users on Reddit, there is now a dedicated webpage on Apple’s website for managing Activation Lock requests. For those unfamiliar, here’s Apple’s explanation of what exactly Activation Lock is: There are a variety of reasons as to why you might need to turn off Activation Lock on a device, such as selling it or gifting it, and Apple is hoping to make this process easier and more straightforward for users....

Apple has confirmed it will hold its FY 11 Q1 financial results conference on January 18, making the session available for playback online in QuickTime format. The event takes place Tuesday, January 18, 2011, 2:00 p.m. PST/5:00 p.m. EST/10:00 p.m. GMT. Apple’s live audio streaming of the event will be available for replay here for approximately two weeks. Apple is expected to confirm impressive Mac sales in the quarter, following publication of Gartner and IDC figures yesterday which confirmed Apple grew market share and unit sales in a period in which the iPad effect served to slow sales of systems from other vendors....

After closing every location outside of Greater China abruptly on March 13, Apple Stores were originally scheduled to reopen after March 27. The temporary closures were later made indefinite. In addition to daily condition monitoring for every Apple facility, O’Brien notes that flexible work arrangements will remain in place. Frequent updates to store teams have provided regular guidance to cut through uncertainty. This includes the option to work remotely as an AppleCare At Home Advisor, if an employee wishes....

The BBC announced today that Zane Lowe, who has worked as an award-winning Radio 1 DJ for nearly twelve years, is stepping down from his position in March and moving to California to take up a role at Apple. Lowe has long been regarded as one of the UK’s top sources for music discovery, and his show helped make many artists the stars they are today. Lowe hasn’t publicly stated what role he’ll be filling at the Cupertino tech company, but it’s not hard to conclude that he’ll be lending his curation expertise to the big upcoming relaunch of the Beats Music streaming service....

Over the weekend, CNBC strangely reported what appears to be a miscommunication from Apple about the iPad charging beyond the 100 percent marker: That last bit was a bit disconcerting, especially because it was not put into context correctly. Apple has a storied history of being popular in classrooms around the world. The company today announced that its ConnectED efforts have helped the company reach more than 32,000 students throughout the United States. Most recently, Carver Elementary School in Indianola, Mississippi joined the ConnectED program, becoming the 66th school to which Apple has provided iPads. For those unfamiliar, ConnectED is a program started by the Obama Administration to provide cutting-edge technology to teachers and students....

As Apple is today updating its apps with macOS Big Sur compatibility, the company has just released an update of Final Cut Pro X on the App Store — I mean, Final Cut Pro. Apple’s video editor finally lost the “X” on its name with today’s update. Apple’s desktop operating system was called “OS X” until 2016 when Apple decided to rename it to “macOS” in order to better match with iOS, watchOS, and tvOS....

Apple today announced a replacement program for the 3TB hard drive included in some 27-inch iMac models due to a concern that some of the components “may fail under certain conditions.” Apple doesn’t mention a specific product number, but notes that affected machines would have been sold between December 2012 and September 2013, which would apply to Apple’s late 2012 iMac model. Apple notes that it is contacting iMac owners that may be affected, but users can also manually submit a claim through the company’s webpage announcing the replacement program....

Apple today has joined the chorus of companies taking a firmer stand against white nationalists and hate groups. According to a new report from BuzzFeed, Apple has disabled Apple Pay support on a handful of websites selling goods pertaining to such groups… The report explains that Apple has dropped Apple Pay from websites selling items such as sweaters with Nazi logos, t-shirts emblazoned with “White Pride,” and a bumper sticker depicting a car crashing into a crowd of protestors....

Update: Business Insider reports that the decision has been further delayed. The planning body An Bord Pleanála has said that it won’t be able to reach a decision now until 11th August as it needs more time to consider the impact of the infrastructure needed to support the data center. Apple has responded to environmental objections to its planned $950M data center, arguing that the proposed development is necessary, would meet projected demand for the next 10-15 years, and would pose no risk to the local environment....

Last week, Apple officially scheduled its latest special event for October 30th. The event will be live streamed as usual, and today Apple has updated its official Apple Events app in preparation for that stream. With the app, you’ll be able to tune in live directly from your Apple TV. With today’s update, the Apple Events app for Apple TV features interface tweaks that highlight the colorful theme of next week’s event....

The previous deal from 2010 gave Apple rights to the patented amorphous metal alloys through Feb. 5 2012. As of yet, we only know Apple has tested Liquidmetal in its iPhone SIM card ejector tools, but we recently heard CEO Thomas Steipp (above) hinting that Apple plans to commercialize the technology....

In an operational sense, today won’t be any different than yesterday at Apple. The people who help curate the sjobs@apple.com email address will probably be putting in some extra hours, the work changing around the placards is probably almost done, and it appears Apple isn’t going to be doing any sort of media tours to ‘help allay investor fears’. And they don’t need to. Nothing has really changed. I imagine bigger changes were slowly happening behind the scenes a few months ago when Operations VP (incidentally, Tim Cook’s original title) Jeff Williams was promoted to the Executive Bios page....

Coming with the highly anticipated new iMac announced today, Apple has launched a redesigned Magic Keyboard with Touch ID as well as a new Magic Mouse and Trackpad. Although we’ve gotten a few new color variants alongside the iMac Pro and Mac Pro, the Magic Keyboard has remained mostly untouched for years with a slim wedge design, Lightning port, and scissor switch keys. Along with Apple officially announcing the all-new iMac at its Spring Loaded event today, the company unveiled an all-new Magic Keyboard with new colors, Touch ID, and even new keys for emoji, Spotlight, Do Not Disturb, and locking your Mac....
