Apple today has officially reported its Q4 2016 earnings results with $46.9 billion in revenue and $9 billion in profit from the July to September quarter. In its earnings press release, Apple says the following: Below is the breakdown of numbers: iPhone – 45.51 million iPad – 9.28 million Mac – 4.89 million Apple’s earnings come out to $1.67 per share, slightly higher than the $1.66 that analysts were expected. Revenues were slightly lower than expectation, $46....

In a letter received by the leaders of AltConf, it was revealed that Apple is cracking down on the live streaming of its WWDC video content at events other than its own. AltConf, which is a community-based developer conference being held in San Francisco the same week as WWDC, had planned to stream content from WWDC in its Viewing Room, but received a letter from an Apple legal representative which demanded that AltConf cease all plans to stream Apple content....

As the US Presidential campaign for Hillary Clinton continues to reel from daily deluge of emails released from Campaign Chairman John Podesta via Wikileaks, we’re finding a number of topics related to Apple and specifically its CEO Tim Cook. Today’s installment is probably worth noting. It has Cook listed as a possible VP candidate pick by Podesta along with many other political, business and tech luminaries seen below. The list is a ‘first cut’ and it is unclear at this point how far through the process Cook made it, or more importantly if he’d even want the job, for that matter....

A new report out from Bloomberg today says that Apple should unveil its 4K Apple TV alongside new iPhone and Apple Watch models. The devices are expected to make a debut at next month’s September event. Over the past few months, we’ve seen leaks from Apple firmware that have pointed to a potential new Apple TV set-top box. In early August, code references to an Apple TV with Dolby Vision and HDR10 support was discovered....

Apple is truly going all-out for World Emoji Day. After showing off the 70 new emoji characters coming to iOS later this year, the company has also overhauled its Apple Leadership webpage with new Memoji avatars… As you can see, every executive listed on the Leadership webpage now features a Memoji face design, including Tim Cook, Jony Ive, and perhaps best of all, Phil Schiller. Memoji is a new feature introduced in iOS 12 that allows users to create a customizable Animoji for themselves....

iPhone 12 The new iPhone 12 models all bring 5G network connectivity. It includes a 6.1” OLED display that is 11% thinner than last year’s iPhone 11. It has a Super Retina XDR display with twice as many pixels as iPhone 11. The display includes “Ceramic Shield” which is tougher than any display coating with 4x better drop performance. It uses Apple’s A14 Bionic chip with better energy efficiency and performance than the A13....

At WWDC, Apple has unveiled the next update to OS X for Macs, branded as macOS Sierra. The update will ship in the fall. macOS Sierra includes Auto Unlock functionality which automatically unlocks your laptops and desktop if in proximity to your iOS devices and Apple Watch. More features after the jump … macOS Continuity will also share the Desktop files between devices, including the iPhone. It’s as seamless as using iCloud Drive....

Digitimes relays a report from the Commercial Times newspaper that claims Apple is exploring the possibility of adding yet another supplier to their tablet-making process. This time the new supplier is a company called Everlight and they have reportedly built and sent LED backlights to Apple for “verification.” Everlight’s LED technology is said to be bright at 2,000 millicandelas (mcd). Everlight has been producing these types of bright LED displays for tablet PC manufacturers since March of this year....

Just a day after a pair of reports shed more light on Apple’s progress in starting a manufacturing presence in India, a new report from Reuters offers a few new details. The report claims that while some Indian officials are eager to have Apple in the country, others aren’t convinced at this point. The most interesting tidbit, however, is that Apple executives will be meeting with Indian government officials next week to discuss plans…...

As expected, Apple today released a new tool created in collaboration with SAP for developing business software. The new cloud platform aims to make it easier to develop business software and comes following Apple’s enterprise-focused partnership with SAP last year. Apple announced on its developer blog this evening that the SAP Cloud Platform SDK is now available to developers: Apple’s VP of Product Marketing Susan Prescott says that the new tools will help developers “transform their businesses” and combine the security of iOS with innovation:...

One of the areas where Apple has seemingly fallen behind its competition — or, more likely, not yet ready to disclose its technology’s full potential — is artificial intelligence. However, there’s no denying that the company is pushing hard towards bettering its existing products (like Siri) behind closed doors, and the latest AI hire is but another proof of such commitment… The Cupertino firm has just hired Carnegie Mellon University professor Russ Salakhutdinov, who will lead an “AI research” team as director....

Apple’s version of “classic MTV,” Apple Music TV, has now expanded to the United Kingdom and Canada after debuting in the US last year. The channel plays an endless stream of music videos all day, every day, as well as incorporating live event content from time to time. A pair of patent applications from Apple that surfaced this morning in the United States Patent & Trademark Office’s (USPTO) database prove Apple’s been researching 3D displays for mobile devices and personal computers. As always, Apple’s solution is one with a twist. The company is calling for a device with two displays, one on the front and the other on the back, which can be interacted with in order to enhance the e-reading experience on mobile devices, automatically turning on and off as you flip the device around....

Apple’s stance on privacy is clear: it will do its best to comply with law enforcement, however, it believes creating a backdoor for its operating system is the wrong thing do to. Today Apple has commented (via TechCrunch) on Australia’s anti-encryption bill, noting that it is “dangerously ambiguous” and “alarming to every Australian.” To break it down, the bill in question is called Access and Assistance. This bill, if it becomes a law, forces tech companies operating in the country to help law enforcement and other intelligence agencies when trying to access encrypted data....

Apple has announced that its CFO Peter Oppenheimer is leaving Apple for retirement in September this year. Luca Maestri, vice president of finance, will take over as CFO. The transition will begin in June to smooth the changeover from Oppenheimer to Maestri. Oppenheimer has been at Apple since before Jobs returned in 1997, as a senior director. He became Senior Vice President and CFO in 2004. Yesterday, it was announced that Oppenheimer would join Goldman Sachs as a board member....

Apple chipmaker TSMC and chip designer ARM have announced that they will work together to create a 7nm FinFET process expected to enter early production in late 2017 and mass production in 2018. This would put it on track for an A11 chip in the iPhone 8. Apple originally used ARM chips in its iOS devices, switching to its own custom chip when it launched the iPhone 5, though still using an ARM instruction set....

Apple is commemorating Martin Luther King Jr Day by devoting its homepage to a full-page photo and quote. Tim Cook also tweeted in honor of Dr King, who led the non-violent civil disobedience protests that played a crucial role in advancing civil rights in the USA … Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. While early reviews of the new Apple TV are somewhat muted, Apple isn’t finished yet. It has confirmed to Buzzfeed that the new device will add Siri support for Apple Music from the beginning of next year. Reviewers have praised Siri’s universal search feature, which allows system-wide searching for video content, and the box will now be capable of carrying out similar searches for music. The move should be good news for Apple as well as for its customers … This means that using the Apple TV remote control, people will be able to say, “Play ‘Hotline Bling’” or “Play the newest Taylor Swift album,” and Siri will take it from there....

At this point, it is well known that the iPhone 8 (or iPhone Pro, or whatever it’s called) will feature a new (5.8-inch) OLED screen. Reports indicate that this display will be exclusively manufactured and supplied by Samsung, as Samsung currently dominates global supply of phone-sized OLED panels. Apple is never happy to depend on just one supplier for a critical iPhone component, not least it’s arch-rival in the tech landscape....
