As spotted by Patently Apple, Apple was today granted five patents covering the form factor and overall design of the Apple Watch. The patent images show the near-invisible bezel, Digital Crown, contacts button, rear sensors and strap attachment slots. The company was last month granted patents on three of its watch bands – the Sport Band, Classic Buckle and Link Bracelet – and we’re likely to see many more watch-related patents granted in the coming months … Apple last year filed a patent application that builds on the watch’s Force Touch feature, a flexible display deforming to provide tactile feedback, while a separate patent application for the Force Touch used in the latest MacBook trackpad covers similar ideas....

We previously reported that Apple would likely introduce a new 128GB iPad model, and today the company made things official with a press release on its website announcing the product. As predicted, Apple will make both Wi-Fi-only and cellular options for the new 128GB capacity fourth-generation iPad. Apple also confirmed that both black and white models of the device would be available starting Feb. 5 through Apple’s online store, retail locations, and authorized resellers....

Apple this weekend has clarified changes to its iTunes Affiliate Program. While it was originally stated that Apple would cut affiliate rates for apps altogether from 7 percent to 2.5 percent, the company has now confirmed that its original announcement was misinterpreted and the changes aren’t as drastic… In a post on the iTunes Affiliate Resources website, Apple confirmed that commissions for in-app purchases will be cut to 2.5 percent, while everything else will remain at 7 percent....

Apple is apparently looking for next-gen flexible LCD screen technology from Japan Display to use in future iPhone models. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is ‘considering’ the new panels for future iPhone designs which could pave the way for bendable smartphones becoming mainstream. Japan Display’s technology uses LCD and plastic rather than the typical LCD and glass, which makes it able to flex and bend as shown in the photo above (left)....

It’s been just over a year since Apple’s Jeff Williams first introduced ResearchKit on stage, and today the Apple COO returned to present the latest developments in Apple’s medical research effort. Apple is implementing new procedures such as temperature checks to ensure the safety of visitors and employees, but regulators in Germany having concerns about these temperature checks. Research firm comScore is out today with its usual report covering U.S. smartphone subscriber market share for the three month period ending in May. Over the last three months Apple has gained in both categories including ‘top smartphone OEMs’ and ‘OS usage’, continuing its lead as the top smartphone manufacturer and growing its share of the market by platform. The previous three month period had Apple at 38.9% of the market, making it the number #1 smartphone vendor in the US over second place Samsung....

Apple has started emailing developers who won the Apple TV developer kit lottery today, according to several users on Twitter who received the message. Users who have been selected will be shipped a development model of the next-generation Apple TV to aid in the creation of their apps. Claims made by The Washington Post that the National Security Agency was tapping into the servers of nine tech companies for details of user activity have been denied by Apple and most of the other companies alleged to be involved. Similar denial statements have been issued by Yahoo, Dropbox, Google, Microsoft and Facebook. Apple executives are now live on stage at the Yerba Buena Arts Center in California, where the company just unveiled the iPhone 5. “Today we’re introducing iPhone 5… It’s made entirely of glass and aluminum,” announced Apple Worldwide Marketing Senior Vice President Phillip Schiller. “You see we’re able to add a fifth-row of icons.” Additional iPhone 5 specs: Retina display: 4-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch display, 1136-by-640-pixel resolution at 326 ppi, 44 percent more color saturation, 800:1 contrast ratio, and fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating on front....

Apple today has shared a new iPad Pro ad touting how it can act as a PC replacement. This is the same angle Apple has taken in several previous advertisements, but this is the first one to focus on the iPad Pro enhancements included with iOS 11. The ad features a young kid using a 10.5-inch iPad Pro paired with a Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil. Apple and Samsung will largely own the smartwatch market between them, predicts Jackdaw Research chief analyst Jan Dawson in a report being issued later today and seen by Re/code. Dawson said that new players should “stay out of the market,” and existing players should scale back their plans. “We do not recommend that existing vendors should maintain current levels of investment when market growth and the overall revenue opportunity remain poor,” Dawson said....
