Following months of rumors, Apple today officially unveiled the 4.7″-screened iPhone 6s and 5.5″-screened iPhone 6s Plus, the “S”-series sequels to last year’s hugely successful iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus — billed by Apple as the most popular iPhones ever. Preserving their predecessors’ physical sizes and glass-and-metal industrial designs, the new models have been updated with a collection of enhancements, including: 3D Touch, force-sensing technology that adds new gestures “peek” and “pop,” which bring up modal windows and things hidden under panes....

Apple first announced the A14 Bionic chip as it unveiled the iPad Air in September. Now just ahead of the company revealing its iPhone 12 lineup that will also feature the chip, Apple’s VP of platform architecture Tim Millet shared more insight on designing the chip and the impressive performance they’re seeing, how Apple is thinking about chip design for the future ranging from iPhone to Mac, and more. Back in 2014 following Apple’s acquisition of Beats, the company planned to transition away from Beats’ design firm Ammunition. Naturally, most assumed that Apple would then be using its own design teams for future Beats products. But we’ve learned that Ammunition is continuing to work with Apple in some capacity, at least collaborating on the design of its latest BeatsX and Beats EP headphones. Before Apple acquired Beats, Ammunition and its founder Robert Brunner, who happens to be a former director of industrial design at Apple from 1989 to 1996, was acting as chief designer for Beats by Dr....

Apple is already facing one class action lawsuit alleging that customers were unknowingly using up substantial amounts of mobile data, and it now faces a second. The issue at stake in this new suit is that the iPhone 5/5s could silently switch from Wi-Fi to LTE under some circumstances, resulting in mobile data usage even when the phone was on Wi-Fi. This was fixed for Verizon users back in September 2012, but law firm Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP claims that Apple didn’t fix it for AT&T users until more than two years later....

Apple has released a formal statement asserting its company’s commitments to human rights and freedom of speech. Apple says it believes in the “critical importance of an open society” and “the best way we can continue to promote openness is to remain engaged, even where we may disagree with a country’s laws”. A group of investors had voiced concerns about how much Apple defers to China’s censorship demands, such as removing VPN apps from the App Store or moving citizen’s iCloud data to Chinese-controlled data centers....

One of the issues Apple has seen antitrust scrutiny from governments around the world is the removal of third-party parental control apps. Now a Russian investigation that started last year has concluded that Apple abused its dominant market position by pulling them. Apple started removing third-party parental control software from the App Store in late 2018. That was just as its own Screen Time app became available with iOS 12....

The joint Google/Apple contact tracing API for coronavirus has ‘a stunning blindspot’ claims one company working on a rival approach designed for adoption by businesses for their own employees, as a second company says there is good reason for companies to use a location-based approach. Not everyone has a smartphone, says Microshare, which is instead proposing the use of Bluetooth badges, keyrings, and wristbands … The Financial Times carries the report, which suggests that businesses may go their own way, rather than rely on government apps which use the Apple/Google API....

That years-long patent infringement battle between Apple and Samsung isn’t over yet. A judge has just ordered the two sides to return to court yet again. Apple was originally awarded $1B after a court ruled that Samsung infringed its iPhone patents. That was later reduced to $339M, but Samsung argued that it was still too much and fought the case all the way to the Supreme Court – where it won....

An Apple coronavirus donation has been doubled as the company seeks to provide additional help in China. Apple CEO Tim Cook today announced on Weibo that the company would be contributing more than 50 million yuan ($7M) in total … Reuters reports that Apple’s original donation was intended for emergency response to the crisis, while the balance is intended to have a longer-term impact. The donations in China are not the company’s only contribution to the fight against the global pandemic....

Addigy, a popular Apple enterprise device management company has announced a record quarter amid the growing trend in remote work. The 6-year-old company saw more new customer revenue in this past quarter than any other quarter in the company’s history. Along with the shift to remote work, Addigy is seeing strong demand from managed service providers who are reselling Adiggy’s ADM platform as part of their own Apple enterprise services. Addigy signed over 50 new MSP clients in Q3 alone....

Apple today announced a substantial $5M donation to Hand in Hand, a relief fund that is providing Hurricane relief in the wake of two huge hurricanes hitting the US South. Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “We applaud Hand in Hand for bringing together people from all over the country to help one another at a time when so many desperately need it. In addition to Apple’s direct contribution to the relief and recovery efforts, we’re making it easy for anyone in the US to make their own donations to Hand in Hand through the App Store and iTunes....

Apple has just unveiled a completely redesigned Mac Pro at WWDC. The new machine features a brand new thermal core, with state of the art Intel Xeon chips. Unlike the previous generation Mac Pro, who’s design remained largely unchanged for years, the new Mac Pro is a cylinder, which is 1/8 the volume of the previous model. According to Phil Schiller, the entire top of the machine is a handle....

Five months after Chinese and American labor watchdog groups petitioned Apple to investigate the use of potentially hazardous materials in its iPhone and iPad assembly process, the company has announced that it will make changes banning the use of at least two chemicals, the Associated Press reported today. The chemicals in question are benzene and n-hexane, which are tied to lukemia and nerve damage, respectively. After conducting a four-month study, Apple says it determined that there was no evidence to suggest that these chemicals posed a threat to workers assembling its devices in twenty-two factories, but announced that it would take steps to ensure that it would not become a problem in the future....

Last month, Apple shared an environmental report specific to the iPhone X. One detail in the report is that “100 percent of packaging fibers are sourced from responsibly managed forests, bamboo, waste sugarcane, or recycled paper.” Now, Apple has released a white paper thoroughly detailing its “Paper and Packaging Strategy”. This past summer, Apple released a video sharing its efforts to responsibly manage 100 acres of forest by 2020 as one part of the company’s three-part “Paper and Packaging Strategy”....

Following the news of Home Before Dark, Apple has also announced the release date for its first TV+ project with Steven Spielberg, the remake of Amazing Stories. Five episodes will be released on March 6. Amazing Stories includes the final performance of Robert Forster, who passed away in October. Apple also today announced that its first British TV production, called ‘Trying’, will debut May 1 on its streaming service. Spielberg is the producer of Amazing Stories....

The Apple Developer Academy is being expanded to Detroit and Korea. The Detroit location will be the first time the programs have ever been made available in the US. The academy offers two programs for would-be iOS developers, one of which lasts a month, the other around a year. Both are free of charge to successful applicants, and Apple provides all the necessary technology … Apple made the announcement today....

Back in 2019, the Apple Developer app was updated with a new feature that made it easier for new developers to sign up for the program without having to access Apple’s website. While this feature was initially only available in the US, Apple is now expanding this option to more regions. The company announced on Thursday the expansion of in-app enrollment for the Apple Developer program. Starting today, users from Canada, France, India, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, and Spain can join the program using the iOS app....

The UK’s Financial Ombudsman has opened an investigation into whether Apple discriminates against severely disabled customers through its iPhone Upgrade Program conditions. The complaint was filed by Colin Hughes, a quadriplegic Apple user who says he is unable to comply with Apple UK’s requirement to visit a store in person in order to join or renew … In the UK, Apple requires customers to physically visit an Apple Store in order to either enroll in the iPhone Upgrade Program, or to renew it....
