Apple and Intel have filed an antitrust lawsuit against Fortress Investment Group, a company backed by SoftBank, reports Reuters. The lawsuit essentially claims that Fortress is an extreme patent troll who is fielding repeated nonsense cases against the tech giants. It alleges Fortress stockpiled patents for the primary purpose of suing companies in a manner that violates antitrust laws. In the complaint, Apple said that it has “suffered economic harm in the form of litigation costs and diversion of resources” in having to deal with the Fortress lawsuits....

Alongside new iPhone 6 models, Apple introduced the new A8 chip to power both devices. The company says its new system-on-a-chip has 2 billion transistors over 1 billion transistors from the A7 chip introduced last year with the iPhone 5s and iPad Air/iPad mini with Retina display. The actual A8 chip has a 13% smaller footprint making more room in the device for other components. Performance wise, the A8 chip boasts up to 25% faster CPU and up to 50% graphics performance....

Apple’s annual “Lucky Bag” sale will begin in Japanese retail stores on January 2nd, the company confirmed today through a page on its website. The NY Times reports that JK Scheinberg, the engineer famously responsible for getting what was then Mac OS running on Intel machines, was rejected for an Apple Store Genius job. Apple has released a pair of new updates meant to fix video-locking issues on iMacs that run Lion and improve hardware compatibility when running Windows in dual boot mode on your Mac. The iMac Graphic FW Update 3.0 is now available for download, weighing in at a paltry 482KB. Apple says the firmware update “fixes a graphics issue that may cause an iMac to hang under certain conditions”. You can also download this update by choosing Software Update from the Apple menu, in which case the update mechanism will determine whether your iMac’s graphics card needs updating and offer the refreshed software appropriately....

Last time we checked with research firm IDC, they listed Apple at 68.3-percent of the worldwide tablet market with approximately 9.3 million units of the iPad 2 shipped in quarter two of 2011. Apple has announced an expansion of its Apple Maps vehicle program, a fleet of vans equipped with advanced sensors collecting data for an improved Maps experience. Among the new locations, Apple will be bringing the vehicles to France and Sweden for the first time, while it also plans to survey a long list of new cities in the US and UK where it’s already started surveying.
