As part of iOS 12, Apple has announced changes to some of the core iOS applications. On stage, the company touted improvements to Apple Books, Apple News, Stocks, Voice Memos, and more. Headlining the announcements, Apple announced support for third-party map applications in CarPlay. The company says that Waze and Google Maps will be supported on CarPlay with iOS 12. In Apple News, Apple has included a new Browse tab that allows for discovering additional topics and channels....

Is Apple trying to block Push Notifications on SIM-unlocked iPhones running on non-Apple blessed carriers? Czech-based PoweryBase reports that Hactivated iPhones don’t get a response from Apple’s Push Notification servers. Further investigation shows that Apple may be blocking Push Notification Service on purpose to fight users who break carrier monthly plan agreements and unofficially unlocking these subsidized devices to work with other carriers which Apple is not partnered with. “When the Push based application such as NotifyMe requests an ID from APNS, the server responds within a second and identifies the device with the unique token....

Apple announced its Independent Repair Program last August that’s designed to let small businesses that aren’t Apple Authorized Service Providers a way to get Apple-genuine parts, training, and resources. The launch of the program was seen as a positive move for small shops that would give more customers access to legitimate repairs. However, the contract for the Independent Repair Program has recently leaked and Apple is seeing heavy criticism from lawyers and members of the repair community who are calling the terms of the contract “crazy” and “onerous....

Update: We’ve confirmed with Apple that iPod nano and shuffle are indeed discontinued and will eventually be removed from sale in retail stores too. Apple has also updated the iPod touch lineup in the process, now offering only 32GB and 128GB models at reduced prices. Apple today quietly removed its iPod nano and iPod shuffle product pages from its website, indicating that the company could be moving towards officially discontinuing the products....

Apple is further expanding its footprint in Cupertino, according to a new report from The Mercury News. Apple has acquired a large office complex in the city, located at the corner of Stevens Creek Boulevard and Torres Avenue. According to documents filed with the Santa Clara County Recorder’s Office this week, Apple has purchased the two buildings for a total of $290 million. Apple has previously housed some of its employees in these buildings, but now it is taking things a step further by purchasing the real estate outright....

Apple has sent an email to iOS developers informing them of upcoming changes to the way taxes are handled on European App Store purchases. Rather than use the same VAT rate across the entire European Union, Apple will now calculate the charges based on the customer’s home country. This could lead to a rise in app prices in some countries where value-added taxes are higher than users are currently being charged....

Confirming what we already told you yesterday, Apple has said the company has no current plans to implement Siri into any other iOS devices besides the iPhone 4S. Apple confirmed the news in an email (seen after the break) to developer Michael Steeber. Apple might position itself as the champion of privacy when it comes to personal data, but court records showed that the company demanded hugely sensitive data from game distribution service Steam to help in the battle with Epic Games. The reason? Epic previously criticized Steam’s cut from game developers, accusing platform owner Valve of “sucking out a huge fraction of the profits from games.” Apple wanted to understand more about Valve’s business model with Steam in order to help it make its own case for the App Store....

The Wall Street Journal has published a report saying that both Apple and Google are actively pursuing exclusivity deals with game developers. Whispers of these type of arrangements surfaced last year, with reports highlighting a partnership between Apple and EA for Plants vs Zombies 2. The Journal confirms that Apple’s exclusivity deals do not include monetary payments. In return, the companies offer “premium placement” (such as featured spots on the home page) for launching first on their platform....

Apple’s gorgeous new Michigan Avenue flagship store looked like the worst example of form over function last week when snow along the Chicago River front meant parts of the store needed to be roped off. Did Apple really design an Apple Store that couldn’t handle a bit of frosty weather in a city like Chicago? The design wasn’t the issue, says Apple, but rather a software malfunction… The problem appeared to be snow building up on the downward sloped MacBook Air-like rooftop....

Earlier this month we noted that Apple was asking courts to add the Galaxy S4 as an infringing device in its ongoing patent dispute with Samsung in California. Now, Apple has officially filed a motion (via FossPatents) outlining five patents infringed by the Galaxy S4 and another two Siri related patents infringed by the device’s Google Now voice controlled search feature. Apple has announced an international expansion for the Apple Independent Repair Provider program. This program first launched in the United States in August 2019, and it’s now expanding to over 200 new countries. The Independent Repair Provider program gives small repair businesses access to the same Apple-genuine parts, training, and resources as Apple authorized service providers. The program is designed to focus on the most common out-of-warranty repairs, such as screen replacements and cracked backs....

Apple today has announced its first ever retail store destined for Taiwan. The company made the announcement on its Taiwan website, while Tim Cook also teased the new location in a tweet this afternoon, calling the store Apple Taipei 101. Apple’s Taiwan retail store will be located in the Xinyi District on the ground floor and basement level of Taipei 101. It’s not explicitly clear when the store will open, through AppleDaily speculates that will be by the end of the month....

Apple’s brand new operating system for its laptops and desktop computers, macOS, will ship in the fall for all customers. A beta for developers will be released later today.
