Apple has successfully acquired Turi, a machine learning company based out of Seattle. According to sources in discussion with GeekWire, Turi’s team will be able to remain in the Seattle region as Apple builds out the technologies further. Turi’s original product, GraphLab, was developed as an open source project for machine learning tasks, but eventually moved into data-mining tasks as it out-performed competitors. Turi held a Data Science Summit in San Francisco earlier last month and has been uploading videos to their official YouTube account dissecting what machine learning is and the future for it....

The start of summer marks the annual kick off of Apple Camp, a collection of hands-on activities helping kids explore creativity. For 2021, Apple is back with a new lineup of in-store and at-home experiences for youth to discover. With a recent European Commission ruling making it look more likely than ever that Apple’s tax arrangements in Ireland will be declared illegal, Bloomberg has been doing the sums on how much the company may owe in back tax. The total? More than $8 billion. Apple funnels all its European revenue through Ireland, where a special agreement with the Irish government means that it pays just 2.5% tax instead of the normal 12....

Apple supplier Dialog Semiconductor warned investors that its revenue growth will be lower than expected this year. The news follows a report in November of last year that suggested Apple is developing in-house power management chips, which is what Dialog currently supplies to the company… In a statement released this evening to The Financial Times, Dialog said that Apple has decided to order “30 percent fewer” of the chips this year than it normally does....

Save the date. Apple has officially announced its next big event for Tuesday, September 10, where we expect to see the iPhone 11 revealed. This date lines up with the rumored event date based on a leaked asset in iOS 13 beta earlier this month. The ‘By innovation only’ event will take place at Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, at 10 am PT/1 pm ET. After forecasting a record quarter with revenue between $84 billion and $87 billion, Apple has just reported its quarterly results for the last three months of 2017. While Apple’s previous quarter included initial iPhone 8 sales, today’s results are the first to include initial iPhone X sales as it launched in early November. Apple reports $88.3b in revenue and $20.1b profit from 77.3m iPhones, 13.2m iPads, and 5.1m Macs sold. That compares to $78....

What is CarPlay? CarPlay is an extension of your iPhone into your car’s entertainment system. I always like to think of it as a second screen for your iPhone, similar to how you might use AirPlay to show your iPhone on your TV. That’s probably why the two technologies share the same naming conventions. Unlike AirPlay, though, you control your iPhone through your car’s head unit and a subset of CarPlay-enabled apps....

Remember Apple’s upcoming retail store in Dresden’s suburban mall we told you about? Today the company confirmed on its German retail site plans to officially open this store on Thursday, March 31, at 8am. Matter of fact, grand opening is being planned throughout the weekend, with extended store hours from Thursday (8am to 10pm) to Friday (9:30am to 10pm) and Saturday (9:30am to 12am). Beginning with April 4, the store will resume normal working hours between Monday-Saturday from 9:30am to 9pm....

Update: An anonymous source cited by MacRumors claims that Apple is planning a major expansion of its retail store program in Latin America, with the first two stores slated for Mexico City. A blurry photo of a claimed internal recruitment document (below) is provided. Other countries are also said to be in line for their own Apple Stores, including Chile, Peru and Argentina. The tipster claims the first Mexico City store will be located in the upscale Via Santa Fe area of Centro Santa Fe, the largest shopping mall in Latin America, while the second store will allegedly be in a prominent shopping district and adopt Apple’s next-generation store design used in Brussels, Cupertino, Dubai and elsewhere....

Two senior government officials have said that Apple is ‘discussing with the Indian government the possibility of manufacturing its products in the country,’ reports the WSJ. Apple is said to be seeking financial incentives in order to proceed. Apple has been trying for some time to open retail stores in India, plans which have been stymied by a government requirement to source 30% of products locally in order to be permitted to open single-brand stores....

In Australia, as part of discovery, Samsung got access to Apple’s Qualcomm baseband source code for the iPhone 4S (lookout for battery issues while you are in there Sammy!). According to FOSSPatents, Samsung’s lawsuits against Apple in Germany are really heating up after a Mannheim hearing set a schedule for January 20 and 27 of 2012. It looks like Apple has a tough case, as the hearing leaned towards Samsung’s claims....

Apple engineers are in the process of contacting iPhone 4S owners in order to determine the cause of alleged battery life issues. One iPhone owner told the Guardian that Apple engineers “installed a monitoring program” on his iPhone to diagnose the source of the problem: The unnamed iPhone user was apparently experiencing a “10% drop in standby every hour”, he turned off location services and Siri in an attempt to troubleshoot which new features exclusive to the iPhone 4S might be causing the battery loss to no avail....

Nokia has announced that Nokia and Apple have finally settled all of their long-running patent disputes relating to mobile phone technology. As part of the patent agreement between Apple and Nokia, Apple has provided Nokia with a one-time payment and will continue to pay Nokia royalties for use of their patents. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop: “The patents in question relate to technologies for enhanced speech and data transmission, using positioning data in applications and innovations in antenna configurations that improve performance and save space, allowing smaller and more compact devices”, according to Nokia’s May 2010 lawsuit filing....

Apple has announced its favorite apps, music, movies, TV shows and books of the year, with Elevate – Brain Training declared iPhone App of the Year while number puzzle game Threes! won iPhone Game of the Year. For the iPad, ‘desktop-class’ image editor Pixelmator took the top slot, with the gorgeous Monument Valley winning best game. Both Threes! and Monument Valley previously won Apple Design Awards at WWDC back in June … For music, Beyoncé (who set a new iTunes sales record last year) took best artist, with Sam Smith best new artist....

Alongside AirPods, Apple has announced Beats will be launching a range of new headphones with wireless Solo3 and wireless Powerbeats 3. They are also launching a new range called BeatsX, which is a cheaper collection that uses cables. All three use the Apple W1 chip for audio output. The Powerbeats3 Wireless provide 12 hours of wireless battery life and ideal for workouts. The Solo3’s go are like earmuffs with a connecting band....

In an update to its retail website, Apple has noted that its 11-year-old location in Simi Valley, California, will be permanently shuttered on September 15th. The closure will occur just after the introduction of the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone Edition, but likely before the new models officially go on sale. Apple’s statement regarding the store’s closure simply reads: No further explanation for the sudden announcement is provided, but one factor may be declining traffic to the Simi Valley Town Center where the store is located....

There’s also a new kaleidoscope watch face. There are also new character watch faces joining Mickey and Minnie: Toy Story characters. Apple Watch is also gaining new monthly challenges in the Activity app with new, personalized monthly challenges and new flair on achievements....

. In a press release, Apple confirmed today that it would indeed launch its iconic flagship phone into the world’s biggest market next month. Apple CEO Tim Cook told an analyst at an earnings conference call in October that Apple planned to launch in China in December. Specific carriers or prices weren’t mentioned. Apple has sold iPhones, the new Mini, and Retina iPads in Hong Kong since launch, and many Chinese have bought in the gray market from there (and elsewhere) to avoid China’s high luxury taxes....

Ahead of pre-orders for the new iMac beginning on Friday, Apple’s Colleen Novielli and Navpreet Kaloty joined the “Upgrade” podcast on Relay FM to talk in-depth about the new product.
